Do You Experience Urinary Incontinence?

You don't have to suffer in silence. Many women assume that urinary leakage is a normal part of getting older, but it's not. If you're experiencing urine leakage, you shouldn't accept this as being normal. Almost all cases of urinary incontinence can be cured or effectively treated with appropriate medical care. There are a variety of procedures and treatments for incontinence, both surgical and non-surgical. You should meet with your doctor, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife, to explain your symptoms.

Types of Incontinence:

  • Urge Incontinence: You feel a frequent and urgent need to urinate and may experience urinary leakage if you cannot get to the bathroom in time. This condition is related to uncontrolled bladder contractions.

  • Overflow Incontinence: You urinate small amounts in a dribbling stream and never feel that you completely empty your bladder. A cause may be that your bladder contracts inadequately or you may have a partially obstructed urethra.

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence: Increased pressure from the abdomen pushes your bladder and urethra down from its normal pelvic position because the connective tissue has torn loose. Certain experiences such as childbirth and heavy lifting can contribute to this condition. There may also be other forms of vaginal relaxation, which you will need to consult with your doctor for appropriate evaluation.

  • Western's OB/GYN Physicians have special training in urinary incontinence procedures, and can help you find the appropriate treatment for you. You may schedule an appointment with one of our providers by calling 952-442-2137 or 952-556-0071.

What Do I Need to Know if I Am Going to Have Surgery?
If a physician recommends you have a particular surgery and you decide to schedule the surgery, you will meet with our Surgery Scheduler to help you arrange the details. She will schedule the surgery with you, the hospital and the physician. The Surgery Scheduler will then instruct you on any surgery preparations prior to your surgery. You will also receive this information in the mail.

A pre-operative appointment is required one week before your surgery. You will schedule this appointment with the physician performing your surgery or with your family physician. The hospital where the surgery is being performed will confirm your surgery 1 to 2 days prior to your surgery. We encourage you to ask the hospital personnel any questions that you may have regarding your surgery, or you may also call our office and speak to our Surgery Scheduler at 952-442-5927 extension 4012.
